Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's ODI Team Against India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a surprise inclusion.

Recent Form Lead to Omission

Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international squad following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.

Labuschagne has played 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on November 21.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates

There have been indications of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a return to the Test team as Australia look for a solution to their batting top-order problems.

Bowling Additions and Injury News

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after taking a break since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he aims to recover from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Schedule

Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”

Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
