2026 Declared the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are far from new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. Yet, their prevalence has noticeably increased in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this rise, I undertook a thorough analysis into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues facilitate a host of innovative control schemes.

A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year so far.

When these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine croaking cultural moment.
